Literature & Gaming - Grand Theft Auto 4
Grand Theft Auto 4 is the game i'm choosing for this assignment and i will try to prove my point that this fantastic but violent game could be considered a piece of literature. But first a little background on GTA 4. Grand Theft Auto 4 was created by Rockstar North and was released in December 2, 2008. It has sold around 6 million units up to date and is the sixth installment of the GTA series of games.
GTA 4 is a open-world action/adventure game in which you take control of Niko Bellic, a Bosnian War veteran that has come to America at the insistence of his cousin, Roman Bellic, to look for the American dream and to also search for the man who betrayed him in the war. The game plays like a long scripted movie but allows you at specific moments to choose your fate, you can either kill or let live, betray or stay loyal, amongst other things. This factor of the game can influence future events of the storyline in the game, however whatever twist of fate that you choose to take will not interfere with the big story line which remains the same.
So this game, in my opinion, can be considered a piece of literature because it has a lot of elements that most novels have. A dynamic main protagonist in Niko Bellic. Secondary characters that help Niko out throughout the game and also make the story progress such as Roman, Brucie, Lil' Jacob, and Packie. Dramatic structure, and an elaborate storyline with tons of dialogue. Also an antagonist in Dimitri Rascalov.
